Japan is known for many great things. Fantastic food, having beautiful nature and gardens, wonderful historic buildings, awe-inspiring modern architecture, and so on. But perhaps one of the biggest things that The Sandbox’s community know about Japan is that they have very strict regulations on cryptocurrencies and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs).

These tough regulations made it very difficult for many of The Sandbox’s Japanese members to participate in certain areas of our metaverse, including the acquirement of SAND tokens, the utility — and soon to be governance — token of The Sandbox metaverse. Only 20 cryptocurrency tokens are approved and listed in Japan.

A historic day for both The Sandbox and Japan

The Sandbox is pleased to announce that, from the 24th May 2022, the SAND token is now listed and available in Japan, through Coincheck. This makes the SAND token the first ever metaverse cryptocurrency that can be purchased in Japan by Japanese citizens.

The Sandbox Japan, our Japanese team, have been, and still are, working tirelessly to make The Sandbox much more accessible to our wonderful Japanese members. The whole process of getting SAND approved and listed in Japan took one year and nine months in total.

The long time that it took to get SAND approved in Japan never once faltered our team’s determination, because we always strongly believed that we would be approved there, and we were willing to do all that we could for our Japanese players and our many amazing Japan-based artists in The Sandbox’s community and Creator Fund.

All of our global team members here at The Sandbox are celebrating this triumphant, pioneering, and groundbreaking news, and we’re certain our members, particularly our Japanese members, are as well.

Who knows — maybe this will pave the way for more metaverse cryptocurrencies becoming available in Japan in the future?

Coincheck Japan

The SAND token is available to Japanese citizens through Coincheck.

Founded by Koichiro Wada and Yusuke Otsuka, Coincheck is a Tokyo-based, Japanese cryptocurrency wallet and exchange. It operates exchanges between Bitcoin, Ethereum, and fiat currencies.

According to Coincheck’s press release, they are also hosting a lottery where 100,000 Yen could be won by 10 Japanese citizens who purchase 50,000 Yen or more of crypto assets on Coincheck.
